Sensitive skin is the type of skin that is easily irritated. Some people may confuse sensitive skin with sensitive condition. Sensitive condition on the skin occurs temporarily when you use wrong skin care products while sensitive skin is the skin that has low barrier. Sensitive skin is more delicate and reacts to not only harsh products but also many other irritants.

Symptoms of sensitive skin vary from mild and invisible sings to severe and noticeable ones. People suffering from sensitive skin may experience skin tightening, tingling/burning sensation, recurrent irritation, redness, blotchiness, itchiness, rash, and flaking. People who have this skin problem are also susceptible to sunburn, freckles, fine lines, wrinkles and cosmetic acne.
If sensitive skin is not treated properly, it can become severe skin diseases such as rosacea and eczema.
Causes of Sensitive Skin
- Skin structure: Some people have the skin that is thinner and more delicate than others. This type of the skin has a less substantial outer barrier of lipids. As a result, it is easier for allergens and irritants to penetrate into deeper skin layers.
- Chemicals: Skin care products, cosmetics, and perfumes are one of common causes that irritate the skin. Fourteen percent of the population is allergic to chemical ingredients such as fragrance and preservatives that can be found in soap, laundry detergent, shampoo, fingernail polish, and many other products.
- Environmental factors: Temperature changes, pollution, sun, cold, heat, and wind can irritate sensitive skin.
- Allergic reactions: Fabrics such as wool and linens cause allergic reaction in some people. Shaving also causes allergic reaction to the skin. Sensitive skin often becomes red and inflamed after shaving because the stroking motion irritates the skin’s surface.
- Stress: In some people, stress interferes with the body’s system that repairs the skin. As a result their faces turn dark red when they are under stress.
- Foods: Spicy foods and foods that contain saturated fats, caffeine, and alcohol inflame and irritate sensitive skin.
- Hormonal imbalance and immune dysfunctions.
Sensitive Skin Care Tips
- Note on factors that causes your skin to become irritated and stay away from them. This is very necessary because what makes the skin sensitive varies from person to person.
- Use skin care products with hypoallergenic labeling. These hypoallergenic products are fragrance-free. A single fragrance may contain hundreds of synthetic chemicals which can cause allergic reactions in sensitive skin. In addition, use proper a skin care regimen for sensitive skin.
- Be aware of temperature changes, especially seasonal temperature. When the weather gets colder, change your moisturizer from a light lotion to a heavier cream. The cream will cover your skin and act as a barrier to prevent environmental triggers. Change from a heavy cream back to a lighter lotion in summer since the heavy cream can clog your pores and make sensitive skin worse.
- Visit a dermatologist. If you have eczema and your skin become red, inflamed, or blistered, seek help from a dermatologist. Your dermatologist can also help identify irritants in your environment that may be contributing to your skin irritation.
- Avoid wearing clothes made of wool and linens. Instead, wear ones made of cotton or silk because these two natural fabrics will feel comfortable against sensitive skins.
