Long hair looks beautiful as long as it is healthy. Long hair needs special care as it is likely to become dry or damaged at the ends. Natural oils from the scalp cannot distribute to the ends if your hair is very long. Dry ends are also caused by exposure to the sun, weather changes, styling products, and heat. Dryness leads to breakage and split ends.
Hair Tips for Long Hair
- Use shampoo and conditioner that are designed for your hair type. Before shampooing, comb your hair to detangle and remove all knots. Apply shampoo to the roots, wash your scalp, and then work the shampoo to the ends. Rinse thoroughly. When you apply a conditioner, concentrate on the ends. Smooth and detangle gently with your fingers. Rinse the conditioner thoroughly to prevent buildup which leads to dull hair. Do not apply a conditioner to the scalp. It causes buildup, leading to itchy scalp and dandruff. Applying the conditioner near the scalp also causes the hair to weigh down.
- Do not wash your hair with hot water. Hot water strips the moisture from your hair, making your hair dry. Wash your hair with warm water or cold water rather than hot water. Rinsing your hair with cold water at the end of your shower is one of tips for shiny hair because cold water can close and smooth your hair’s cuticle.
- Do not rub your hair with a towel. Rubbing your hair with a towel damages the outer surface of the hair. Instead, just pat your hair with a towel and let it dry naturally.
- Do not brush your hair while it is still wet. Wet hair is weak. Brushing it will cause breakage. Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb instead.
- Apply a deep conditioning treatment once a week. A deep conditioner helps put the moisture back into dry hair. It helps smooth the cuticle, making your hair shinier and healthier.
- Avoid using any kind of heat styling appliances. The heat dries out your hair strand. Blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons cause damaged hair, split ends, and breakage. However, if you must use a heat appliance, use it on the low heat setting. Also, always apply a thermal or heat protection product before using the heat appliance.
- Avoid the use of chemical treatments such as perms, hair dyes, and relaxers. The harsh chamicals weaken your hair’s protein, causing damaged hair.
- Avoid using a rubber band. Holding your hair with an elastic or rubber band causes damage and breakage. If you want to pull your hair back, use a scrunchie instead.
- Brush your hair to distribute natural oils from the scalp. Only brush the hair when it is dry and untangled. If your hair has knots, use a comb to detangle before brushing.
- Protect your hair from extreme weather. In winter, wear a scarf, hat, or cap to protect your hair from the cold and wind. In the summer, you spend hours in the sun. Sun exposure can fade your hair color and cause dry hair. Apply a leave-in conditioner that contains sunscreen. Also, wear a hat or light scarf when you have outdoor activities.
- Trim your hair often. If your hair is damaged or has a split end, you need to remove it. There is no way to repair damaged hair and split ends. Damage to your hair will move up the roots of your hair and keep on damaging until it is cut off. Try to remove as much damage as possible at the beginning. Continue trimming your hair a half inch every month until all damage is gone. If you already have healthy hair and want to maintain your length, get a trim once every 6 – 8 weeks. If you want to grow your hair further, trim your hair once every 3 months.
