Hair loss can occur in both women and men. Basically, the normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 3 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp is in a resting phase. It is normal to shed hair every day. We lose between 100-125 hairs on any given day. However, some people may experience excessive hair loss.
Factors affecting hair loss can often take up to three months to have an effect. So, if you experience hair loss, consider events that happened up to three months prior to the hair loss.
Female Pattern Baldness vs. Male Pattern Baldness
Female pattern baldness is different from male pattern baldness. Female pattern baldness goes around the whole top of the head whereas men lose it on the temple, the crown, and the bald spot in the back. While balding in men almost always occurs as a result of a genetic predisposition and age, in women, it can happen at any time. The hair loss can first become apparent in women by ages 25 to 30.
Causes of Hair Loss
-Genetics
- Illnesses: Auto-immune disorders, thyroid disease, high fevers, chronic illnesses can cause hair loss. Some inflammatory conditions also cause hair to come out in clumps or patches.
- Medications: Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners, medicines used for cancer, gout, high blood pressure and heart problems.
- Scalp infection: Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss.
- Hormonal problems and changes in hormone levels: Hormone imbalance, menopause or pregnancy can cause hair loss.
- Diet: Deficiency of protein, zinc or iron can cause hair loss.
- Hair care products such as dyes and shampoos.
- Stress: Stress can lead to an increase in hormones circulating through the blood stream and cause problems with the body systems responsible for hair growth.
- Aging: Hair loss is a normal part of aging process.
Treatments for Hair Loss
What treatment you need depends on your type of hair loss. If a medicine is causing hair loss, you may ask your doctor to prescribe a different medicine. If you lose hair because of hair care products, you should stop using such products and/or switch to other products. Correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss.
