As we age, our hair experiences several signs of aging. Aging hair can add years to your look. Many signs of aging hair begin to appear in the 30s. Although the main cause that makes your aging hair is determined by your genes, start taking good care of your hair as soon as possible will help lessen the effects of aging.

Dull, dry hair

As we age, our hair loses elasticity, hair follicles shrink, and sebum and keratin production diminishes. These changes result in dull, dry hair. Low levels of estrogen during menopause can also cause hair to become dry.

If you’re suffering from the problem of dull dry hair, then you should limit the use of heated appliances such as straightening irons, curling irons, and even hair dryers. Eating foods rich in vitamin A and E is also one of tips for shiny hair.

Hair loss

Most people experience some hair thinning or hair loss as they age. About a quarter of men begin to show signs of hair loss by the time they are 30 years old, and about two-thirds of men have baldness by age 60. Male-pattern baldness” is the receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown. The most common cause of hair loss in males in their 30s is DHT, a derivative of testosterone. DHT causes hair loss by restricting the follicle from receiving essential nutrients, causing thinning hair.

Almost 40 percent of women will experience some degree of hair loss by the age of 35. Female-pattern baldness is different from male-pattern baldness. Most women first experience hair thinning where they part their hair but don’t have a receding hairline.

Hair loss is also caused by heredity. If you are genetically predisposed to losing your hair, thinning hair may start as early as your late teens or early twenties. Menopause also causes thinning hair in women. The diminishing of estrogen during menopause and the rise in the male hormone testosterone, which causes male-pattern baldness, can prompt hair thinning and loss. This is why post-menopausal women sometimes have male-pattern baldness. Women with male-pattern baldness can improve hormonal balance and thus the hair thinning problem by eating plenty of soy foods, such as tofu, soybeans and soy milk.

Gray hair

The most obvious hair aging sign is a change in color. Each hair follicle contains melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. As we age, our hair follicles slowly produce and eventually stop producing the melanin. So hair becomes more transparent and appears gray or silver.

Graying often starts in the 30s. Your genes also determine how your hair changes. Caucasians are likely to get gray hair earlier than Asians and Africans.

Gray hair is a natural part of the aging process so there is no way to reverse graying hair. Although researchers have been searching for a way to cure the graying of hair, all you can do now is to use hair dye to cover the gray hair.     I’ve always had long hair and still do. I keep it shorter than in the past (just past the shoulders) because of my age and accompanying dryness. At 61, I’ve noticed hair changes that are depressing.

    I’m 61 and my hair has turned completely dry. I do color it at home & only the roots when the grey comes in. I also notice that the volume of my hair has decreased.

    It seems that the only time my hair really looks great is when I leave my hairdresser but eventually I have to wash my hair and even when I copy of methods, and using a product she recommended, it still is dry. It looks nicest when it’s straight (I have wavy hair), but I feel like I’m scorching my hair only more when I use the flat iron on it (after putting on some kind of moisturing treatment).

    If I just wash it and let it dry on its own, it comes out wavy, frizzy, and most of all dry. If I put something for shine on it, it only makes my hair look oily. I don’t know which is worst.

    I used to have beautiful hair after doing nothing but washing, conditioning, detangling. Now, whatever I do, it stays dry. And, feels like straw. I don’t know what regime to follow to get a shiny head of hair back with a bit more volume.
