Acne Supplements

Acne sufferers often seek a perfect treatment to cure acne. Some wonder if there is a perfect vitamin that can clear up the skin for good. While no vitamin alone will cure acne, there are some vitamins that play key roles in hormonal balance that is important for acne sufferers. Supplements for acne also decrease inflammation and infection and nourish the skin.

Vitamin A

Researchers have shown that vitamin A is an essential nutrient to treat acne. Acne is caused by acne bacteria. Vitamin A helps to remove dead skin cells and this reduces the chances of developing clogged pores that encourage surplus growth of the acne bacteria. Low vitamin A blood levels can cause or worsen an acne outbreak.

Take 10,000 units of vitamin A once or twice a day. Don’t consume too much vitamin A because vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin which is not readily excreted from the body.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, one of antioxidants, fights free radicals in the body. Free radicals damage your skin and can cause skin problems such as acne. Vitamin E also helps prevent and reduce acne scars by aiding in healing your skin. To treat acne, take 400 units of vitamin E a day.

Fish Oil

Fish oil supplements are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that reduce redness and puffiness of acne lesions. Fish oil also lowers sebum production by balancing mood and reducing stress. Take 0.5 to 1.8 grams of fish oil supplements a day to control acne.

Zinc

Many studies have shown that the true cause of acne is hormonal imbalance. Zinc helps to balance out hormonal production and aid in healing of tissue and preventing acne scarring.

To use zinc for acne treatment, take 30-100 mg of zinc a day. Do not take more than 100 mg of zinc in supplements per day. Improvement may take up to 2 to 3 months. Long-term use of zinc inhibits copper absorption so you need to take 2 or 3 mg of copper a day. A copper deficiency can leads to certain health problems.

Selenium

Selenium improves skin elasticity and boosts the action of antioxidants. Selenium for acne should be combined with vitamin A and E for the best results. The combination of selenium, vitamin A, and vitamin E can take up to twelve weeks to reduce acne. Start with 75 to 150 micrograms (mcg) per day. Keep the daily dosage under 200 mcg per day as it can become toxic.

Magnesium

Magnesium helps balance out your hormones, which is a major cause of acne. Magnesium is also an anti-stress mineral. Take at least 600 to 900 mg of magnesium per day.
